A Brief Guide to your Wedding Day

We suggest that you arrange for your wedding ceremony to commence at 12.00 noon with the registrars.

Guests may arrive from 11.30 am to gather prior to the ceremony. However, we are by law unable to serve any alcohol prior to the ceremony and ask, therefore, that in order to avoid disappointment guests do not arrive too early.

After your wedding ceremony has been performed we allow 1½ hours for your photographs to be taken and it is at this point that we will serve pre-luncheon drinks to your guests.

Our suggestions are as follows:

  • Jugs of Fresh Fruit Punch

  • Mulled Wine

  • Pimms and Lemonade

  • Orange Juice

  • House Champagne

  • Sparkling Wine

  • House Wine

  • All jugs and bottles contain approximately 6 glasses.

Guests will be seated in the dining room by 2.00 pm.

The cutting of your wedding cake, toasts and speeches will take place in the lounge after lunch. Coffee will then be served until 5.00 pm when guests will be required to depart.

Guidance for those who wish to Marry on Approved Premises

1: As soon as a couple have made provisional arrangements for their marriage on approved premises they should be advised to contact the Superintendent Registrar for the district in which the premises are situated, which in the case of Thornbury Castle is South Gloucestershire Register Office, Poole Court, Poole Court Drive, Yate, South Glos. Telephone: 01454 863140.

2: Without the presence of the Superintendent Registrar there can be no marriage and any arrangements for the use of the premises depend entirely on their availability. It is, therefore, essential that the couple make an advanced booking with this Superintendent Registrar for his/her attendance at their proposed marriage as soon as a booking can be accepted. A fee for this attendance will be payable to South Gloucestershire Council before the ceremony.

3: Each party to the marriage will also have to give their notice of marriage to the Superintendent Registrar of the district in which they live. This notice must be given in person and is valid for twelve calendar months.

4: The couple should be warned that any arrangement made for a marriage to take place on the approved premises are dependent on:

    a) the attendance of the Superintendent Registrar and a Registrar for the district in which the premises are situated; and,

    b) the issue of both of the authorities for marriage by the Superintendent Registrar to whom notice of the marriage was given.

5: When notice is given in a different registration district from the one where the marriage is taking place, the couple will have to collect the Superintendent Registrar's authorities before the ceremony and ensure that they are delivered to the Poole Court.

6: The couple should be advised that only a civil, non-religious ceremony can be permitted by the Superintendent Registrar. Any music, reading, words or performance, which form any part of the ceremony, must be secular. The content of the ceremony must be agreed in advance with the Superintendent Registrar who will be attending the ceremony.

7: Any rights of copyright for music, readings etc. permitted at the ceremony are a matter for the couple and holder of the approval
