Things to do in and around Bristol this summer
Summer at Thornbury Castle is simply enchanting; from aperitifs in the afternoon sunshine to picnics on the lawn, there's plenty to do in the castle grounds itself but also if you fancy adventuring further afield then you will not be disappointed!
This year, Head Gardener Matthew Bufton, has started offering Garden Tours, providing expert knowledge and insight as you walk around the stunning gardens sharing points of interest such as the bee skeps in the Goodly Garden. If you're a devout castle lover then you can get even more of a fix at Berkeley Castle; only a short drive from Thornbury Castle, there are a multitude of events happening this summer. The talented performers of Past Times Living History will enlighten visitors about Henry VIII's extraordinary larger than life story, transporting you back to the 16th Century where you can hear the real stories, see the glamour and the politics and find out who was Henry’s favourite wife? There's also a Knight School for children, where they can learn the art of sword fighting on 29th May and a Dinosaur Day in June where all the family can meet Raptor and Rexy and find out more about these prehistoric creatures. See all events here.
Not only is Westonbirt Arboretum a must-see place to visit whilst you're staying at Thornbury Castle, with over 2,500 different species of tree from all around the world, they also put on amazing open air music events! This summer they have Paul Weller performing on 8th June, Tom Grennan on 9th June and Jack Zaveretti on 10th June. It's a brilliant family day out surrounded by nature - perfection. See more here
If music is your thing, there are a whole host of live concerts taking place across the city and beyond. Take a look here to see some of the most exciting and largest festivals across the UK. From Glastonbury to Bristol Harbour Festival to 'Love Saves The Day' at Ashton Court Estate - there will be something to suit everyone's music taste.
Something else that might be of interest to budding historians is Select Society's play 'Divorced, Beheaded, Died: An Audience with King Henry VIII' being shown at Woodchester Mansion on 24th June. This immersive theatre has a two act performance where Henry will recount the events of his life and long reign, telling of his wives and of his children. The second act will end with an opportunity to pose questions to the King himself.
Highgrove House is the private residence of Their Majesties The King Charles III and The Queen Consort and has been in King Charles' life since 1980; if you fancy enjoying the finer things in life like that of royalty, then a Champagne Garden Tour might just be an afternoon well spent. Royal International Air Tattoo
Thrill-seekers, this one is for you! The Royal International Air Tattoo from 14th-16th July is jam packed full of things to do from the air show itself with over 266 aircraft, to exhibitions and interactive family entertainment. Book your tickets here.
The annual Balloon Fiesta is a must-see if you're visiting the area between 10th-13th August. Europe's largest annual hot air balloon festival, it attracts over 100 hot air balloons and 500,000 visitors over the four days of the event. It's certainly a spectacle and a sight to behold, especially as the sun is setting. See more here.
Wake the Tiger - Amazement Park
If you're looking for something to do that's totally unique, then take a visit to Wake the Tiger Amazement Park.
